10 Budget-Friendly Tips for Growing Your Book Collection

Looking to enrich your book collection without overspending? Here are ten cost-effective ways to stock your bookshelves with delightful reads:

1. Your local library, or really any library: Libraries often sell books for a variety of reasons. Perhaps there are too many copies, the books are a bit worn, or they need to make space for newer editions. These books are usually sold at bargain prices! I’ve found many beautiful coffee table hardback books, which retail for over $50, for just $3—no exaggeration! Paperbacks are even cheaper, typically around $2. As an avid reader, I’ve also come across many recent releases. Plus, as I’ve gotten to know the librarians, several have even set aside books for me!

Be sure to check out the “Bookstore” sections of a library. Ask your local librarian what this section is called in your local area.

2. Thrift Store Gems: Visit thrift stores like Goodwill and ARC for budget-friendly book finds, including complete sets. Don’t overlook online options like GOODWILLBOOKS.com!

Look for books in good condition at thrift stores. Be sure to check their online book section!

3. Yard Sales and Tag Sales: I am always on the lookout for book bundles at garage sales, yard sales, and tag sales, where you could come across boxes of books available for just a few dollars.

4. County Book Sales: My most recent discovery was the local county book sale. Most counties will have a yearly or bi-annual book sale. At the last sale I attended, on the final day, you could buy as many books as you could fit in a bag they provided for just $10!

5. Amazon Resale: Explore Amazon’s resale book options for specific titles, though prices may not always match those found at libraries.

6. Book Swaps: Organize or join book swap events with friends, family, or your community to trade books without spending money.

7. Book Clubs: Join book clubs (even virtual book clubs!) to discover new reads and potentially exchange or borrow books from fellow members.

8. E-book Deals: Look for discounted or free e-book promotions on platforms like Kindle, Kobo, and Apple Books to expand your digital library affordably.

9. Discounted Bookstores: Explore discounted bookstores online or in your area, like Book Outlet, ThriftBooks, and Half Price Books, for discounted bestsellers and new releases.

Get creative with your book displays! I love stacking them in various parts of my home, from stair landings to benches, on chairs etc.

10. Book Subscription Boxes: Consider subscribing to book subscription services for curated selections of books at reasonable prices, a fun way to explore new authors and genres.

Being consistent in checking out discount book sales is key to filling your shelves on a budget. It’s a gradual process, so be patient—great finds take time to uncover. Let me know what you find & happy reading!
